Gandhisagar to Host Cheetahs’ 2nd Hub, Kuno Faces Security Concerns
New cheetah relocation plans underway for Gandhisagar, but Kuno National Park still grapples with security issues….
MadhyaPradesh : The Centre is moving ahead with plans to introduce 12-14 cheetahs from African countries to Gandhisagar Wildlife Sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh, making it the second hub for the species. This comes even as Kuno National Park, which currently houses 24 cheetahs, continues to face security lapses.
The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has laid out an action plan to relocate leopards from Gandhisagar to make room for cheetahs. The plan also includes enhancing the prey base with species like chitals and nilgai to support the cheetahs’ survival.
However, Kuno’s preparedness has raised concerns. Madhya Pradesh’s Chief Wildlife Warden recently flagged issues such as inadequate prey and security weaknesses, noting that poaching attempts had been foiled at the park earlier this year.
Before their relocation, the new cheetahs will undergo health screenings and quarantine in their source countries to ensure they are free from any diseases that could affect India’s wildlife.
