Experts Discuss Challenges of Electricity Quality at Kurukshetra University

Special lecture highlights solutions to improve power grid systems and address harmonic issues….

Kurukshetra: A special lecture was held at the University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET) at Kurukshetra University, focusing on the challenges arising from harmonics and electricity quality in modern and future energy grids. Dr. Dinesh Kumar, an international expert from Denmark, addressed these critical issues, emphasizing the need to upgrade India’s energy sector for a developed future.

Dr. Kumar, an engineering expert at Denmark’s research labs, stressed the importance of addressing power quality challenges in both current and upcoming energy grids. According to him, future grids must evolve as quickly as the technologies connected to them, requiring the establishment of rapid development standards.

He elaborated on the various issues that arise in the energy sector, including the frequency differences found in various electronic devices. Dr. Kumar also discussed how harmonics affect industrial equipment, distribution transformers, and renewable energy sites such as solar farms and wind-based microgrids. He noted that problems like capacitor failure and transformer overheating could be mitigated with the adoption of new techniques developed for power grid systems.

To address these issues, Dr. Kumar presented a series of new mitigation techniques, backed by two approved patents and several publications. These methods offer practical and cost-effective solutions for both new and existing systems. One of the patented solutions includes a novel converter design that dynamically adapts to grid conditions, reducing the risk of overheating and enhancing the overall power quality.

As the demand for renewable energy sources increases, ensuring the quality of electricity distribution becomes crucial. Dr. Kumar’s insights provided valuable solutions for managing the complexities associated with integrating renewable energy into the power grid, offering a pathway toward a more reliable and efficient electricity system.
