EU Middle East envoy pledges two-state solution

Jerusalem: Despite Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s staunch opposition to a Palestinian state, the EU’s Middle East peace envoy believes a two-state solution is possible.

In an AFP interview, Sven Koopmans said Netanyahu’s cabinet cannot ignore European perspectives on settling the Gaza battle while Israel needs international assistance.

Many argue that Hamas’s October 7 bombings precipitated the disastrous conflict, making a Palestinian state even more imperative. Netanyahu and certain right-wing officials reject it.

“I think that recently he was very explicit about rejecting the two-state solution,” he remarked.

“Now, that means that he has a different point of view from much of the rest of the world.”
