Drone Crashes Into New Jersey Homeowner’s Backyard, Sparks Panic and Investigation
The crash in Pequannock Township raises concerns about drone safety and surveillance.
A drone crashed into a New Jersey homeowner’s backyard on Thursday night, December 12, 2024, in Pequannock Township, Morris County, causing panic among residents. The incident occurred around 8:45 PM. Local authorities confirmed that the drone was a “hobby or toy type” and not a large commercial or military-grade aircraft.
In response to the incident, the town’s mayor, Ryan Herd, drove to the scene in a Ford Econoline van to assess the situation. Herd expressed concerns about the safety of drones flying over residential areas, stating, “Nobody knows whose drones are flying over us, what they’re flying over us for, or where they’re taking off and landing.”
This crash follows a series of drone sightings in the area, which have raised alarms among local authorities. Recently, New Jersey cops warned of possible “copycat” drone incidents, suggesting the incident may have been inspired by drone surveillance drills near the Picatinny Arsenal base.
Investigation and Concerns:
The crash is now under investigation by the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office. Mayor Herd urged residents not to chase or shoot at drones, fearing that such actions could lead to further danger, including a larger crash that could cause harm.
The event also aligns with growing national concern over mystery drone sightings, which have prompted various responses from public officials, including comments from president-elect Donald Trump, who questioned whether the government had full knowledge of these activities.
