In another achievement for the country’s indigenous missile development programme, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) tested several weapons over the last three days including the extended range Pinaka missile with the Army and a flight test of the indigenously designed and developed Stand-off Anti-Tank Missile (SANT), which was launched from a helicopter at Pokhran ranges.
The new Pinaka ER gives it a range of around 70 km, over the 45 km existing range of the missile which has been with the Indian forces for nearly a decade. The SANT was first tested by DRDO from a ground-based platform in 2018. For SANT, the Defence Ministry said the “flight-test was successful in meeting all its mission objectives”.
It said the missile is equipped with a “state-of-the-art MMW seeker which provides high precision strike capability”. It will be able to hit targets in a range up to 10 km, the statement said. Designed and developed by Research Centre Imarat, Hyderabad, in coordination with other DRDO labs and participation from industries, this is the third in the series of “indigenous stand-off weapons to be tested in recent times after long range bomb and smart anti airfield weapon for strengthening the arsenal” of the Air Force.
Pinaka has been designed jointly by DRDO, Armament Research & Development Establishment (ARDE), Pune, and High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL), Pune.
