Cross-Border Drug and Weapon Smuggling Module Busted in Amritsar; 8 Arrested, Including Two Porters
Amritsar: Amritsar rural police’s CIA staff have successfully busted a major trans-border drug trafficking and weapon smuggling operation. Eight individuals, including two porters employed at the Attari Integrated Check Post and notorious criminal Jagroop Singh, alias Jupa, were arrested in connection with the operation. Jagroop is known to have links with the foreign-based gangster Pavitar Chaura.
The arrested suspects were reportedly staying as paying guests at a location near Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar, using the accommodation as a storage and transit hub for smuggled drugs and weapons.
The arrested individuals include Karandeep Singh, Gursewak Singh (alias Sandhu Majhail), Nishan Singh, Varinder Singh, Lovepreet Singh (from various areas in Attari), and Jugraj Singh, along with Jagroop Singh. During the raid, police recovered 4.5 kg of heroin, six firearms (including two Glock pistols, one .30 bore Zigana pistol), 14 live bullets, Rs 1.5 lakh in drug money, a car, a motorcycle, three weighing machines, and 10 mobile phones. The heroin seized is estimated to be worth around Rs 23 crore on the international market.
According to Amritsar Rural SSP Charanjit Singh Sohal, the gang retrieved the contraband and weapons, which were smuggled via drones across the International Border, and stored them at their PG accommodation. From there, they distributed the drugs in various parts of the city.
The police investigation began with the interception of Lovepreet Singh, who was found carrying two pistols. His questioning led to the discovery of the PG accommodation, where Jagroop Singh, Karandeep Singh, and Gursewak Singh were arrested. Gursewak is also a suspect in a firing incident in Mehta area.
Jagroop Singh, who has more than 11 criminal cases against him, was previously arrested by the police in May 2024 for a similar offense and was out on bail at the time of his re-arrest. He is said to have close ties to US-based gangsters Pavitar Chaura and Husandeep Singh, as well as Babbar Khalsa member Lakhbir Singh Landa.
