Congress MLA Demands Action Against Police Harassment of Councillors
Allegations of Intimidation Before Phagwara Mayoral Election………
Phagwara : Ahead of the oath ceremony and Mayoral elections for Phagwara Municipal Corporation (MC) councillors, Congress MLA Balwinder Dhaliwal has urged Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gaurav Toora to intervene and halt the alleged harassment of Congress councillors by local police.
In a letter to the SSP, Dhaliwal claimed that police were summoning Congress councillors to the station at odd hours and harassing their family members, including women and children, creating a tense environment. He also requested that copies of any complaints be provided to the Congress Legal Cell for review.
With 22 councillors, Congress is well-positioned to secure a majority, potentially electing their Mayor with the backing of three BSP councillors and two Independents, totaling 29 votes. However, concerns have been raised over pressure tactics from the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which has 12 councillors and is attempting to garner support from other factions.
Meanwhile, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed the police and civil administration to ensure a fair and transparent Mayoral election, with the necessary security arrangements in place. The election is scheduled for 4 PM tomorrow.
