CM Biren says Manipur horror video offender ‘arrested quickly’,

The mob was charged with murder and gang rape in two FIRs that were submitted in the previous two months, one with the Kangpokpi district police on May 18 and the second with the Thoubal district police on June 21.

GUWAHATI: In connection with the public molestation of two tribal women, which only came to light after a video of the incident went viral on social media in the wake of the ethnic unrest in the northeastern state, the Manipur police have detained one of the principal suspects.

On July 19, a two-month-old video of the incident went viral, sparking indignation across the country and harsh criticism of the administration for failing to stop the violence.

Two women from the Kuki community were reportedly stripped, paraded, and publically molested by a mob on May 4 in B Phainom village in the Kangpokpi region. The mob was reportedly led by the Meitei community.

On Wednesday, the Manipur police said that a complaint of kidnapping, gang rape, and murder against unidentified armed criminals had been filed at Nongpok Sekmai police station in the Thoubal district and that an investigation had begun.

A furious crowd allegedly set fire to the accused’s home after his detention.Four people in total have been detained in relation to the event. Police said in a statement that they were conducting raids to apprehend everyone responsible.

According to official sources, police were conducting searches and will soon make more arrests.

According to Chief Minister N Biren Singh, who is facing criticism from the public and calls for his resignation, the police reported the incident on their own and detained the suspect as soon as the video aired. He declared that the state government would not keep quiet about the “heinous” crime but instead work to guarantee that those responsible received the harshest penalties possible, including the possibility of the death penalty.

Biren Singh claimed that as soon as he saw the video, he immediately gave the Cyber Crime Department instructions to investigate its veracity and launch a massive search operation to find the perpetrators.
