Boatman Earned 30 Crores, Gets Tax Notice..
A Prayagraj boatman made ₹30 crore during Mahakumbh, receiving a ₹12.8 crore tax notice, sparking debate on windfall taxation…
New Delhi : A boatman from Prayagraj, Pintu Mahara, has become the center of discussion after making an astounding ₹30 crore in just 45 days during the Mahakumbh Mela. The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath highlighted his earnings, following which the Income Tax Department issued him a ₹12.8 crore tax notice under Sections 4 and 68 of the Income Tax Act, 1961. This case has triggered debates on windfall income taxation and how sudden earnings should be taxed.
Pintu Mahara, who usually earns around ₹500 per day, saw a massive financial turnaround during Mahakumbh. The unprecedented influx of pilgrims led to a surge in demand for boat rides, causing fares to rise from ₹100 to ₹1,000 per ride. Mahara and his family, operating a fleet of 130 boats, collectively earned a staggering ₹30 crore in just over a month. However, this unexpected prosperity came with an unforeseen burden—a heavy tax liability of ₹12.8 crore.
The tax notice sent to Pintu Mahara has sparked a nationwide debate on whether sudden, unplanned income should be taxed similarly to business revenues. Many financial analysts argue that one-time high earnings should be taxed differently from regular business income. Financial planner and SEBI-registered analyst A.K. Mandhan highlighted that Mahara had spent his entire life earning a modest income and had never been part of the formal tax system. The sudden financial windfall turned into a nightmare as he now faces a massive tax burden that he might struggle to pay within the stipulated time.
Social media users have also voiced their opinions on the issue, with some arguing that tax laws should be more accommodating for individuals experiencing unexpected earnings. Others believe that Mahara’s windfall profits should be taxed fairly, just like any other high-income business. The case has also brought attention to how traditional occupations and small-scale workers should be integrated into the formal tax system.
As Mahara navigates his financial crisis, this case serves as a crucial example of how windfall gains and taxation policies can significantly impact individuals who were previously outside the tax net. The coming days will determine whether he will receive any relief from the tax authorities or have to comply with the full tax demand.
