BJP leader Ashwani, five others arrested for communal slogans at Jantar Mantar
Ashwani Upadhyay questions the authenticity of video and its misuse against them
New Delhi, Aug 10 (UNI) BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay and five others were arrested by Delhi Police on Tuesday in connection with chanting of controversial slogans during a demonstration at Jantar Mantar.
The slogans were ostensibly chanted during an event — ‘Colonial Laws and Make Uniform Laws’ — organized by Supreme Court lawyer and former spokesperson of Delhi unit of BJP Ashwini Upadhyay.
Upadhyay, however, had claimed that he had nothing to do with the video and his protest was focused on abolishing British laws.
Besides Upadhyay, Deepak Singh Hindu, president of Hindu Force, Vineet Kranti, Preet Singh, director of Save India Foundation and Vinod Sharma, who is the head of Sudarshan Vahini, have been arrested.
An FIR was filed by Delhi Police after a video went viral purportedly showing a group of protesters raising communal slogans.
According to Delhi Police, the event did not have permission.
The nature of the slogans in the video drew ire from various sections, including political leaders.
Upadhyay later issued a statement that the video was being misused and challenged its authenticity.
“A video is viral on social media, in which a person is giving a communal speech. The video is being misused to malign me. I do not know any of these people, nor did I call them,” Upadhyay had said in a letter to Delhi Police.
