Bhagwant Mann moves Vote of Confidence motion in Assembly

Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday moved a confidence motion in the state assembly. Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit had given his permission to convene the House on September 27 after days of squabble between the Raj Bhavan and AAP government over holding a session of the Punjab Assembly.

There was uproar in the House as opposition Congress and BJP MLAs asked the CM to spell out reasons for such motion as the ruling party has sufficient numbers and may get the motion adopted easily. Yet the AAP government has been ignoring the main problems of Punjab like unempployment, farmers’ losses due to heavy rains and crime.

The Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan, however, allowed the motion to be moved in the House, amid hot exchanges between members from both sides. On this, two members of BJP Ashwani Sharma and Jangi Lal Mahajan walked out of the House in protest.

The AAP government in Punjab had earlier sought the special session on September 22 to bring a confidence motion, days after it accused the BJP of trying to topple its government, but the Governor had denied permission. Later the Raj Bhavan asked the Government to send a copy of the agenda for the Special Session after giving permission for Sept. 27.
