Chandigarh : Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa, a prominent Sikh activist, passed away at the age of 91. Khalsa, a resident of Hassanpur village on Ferozepur road in Ludhiana, gained national attention for his tireless fight for the release of Sikh prisoners who had served their sentences but remained incarcerated.

In January 2015, at the age of 82, Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa began a hunger strike to demand justice for these prisoners. His protest lasted for eight years, continuing until January 2023, making it one of the longest and most significant non-violent movements in Punjab’s history. His dedication and unwavering stance brought global attention to the issue of unjust imprisonment of Sikh individuals.

Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa’s death marks the end of a chapter in the struggle for the rights of Sikh prisoners, but his legacy as a fierce advocate for justice lives on.
