New Delhi, Jan 23 (UNI) In a veiled attack on the Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday that “attempts were made to negate the contributions of many great leaders” in India’s struggle for independence but now “the nation is rectifying those mistakes.” The PM was speaking on the occasion of unveiling a hologram statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at India Gate on his 125th birth anniversary on Sunday. “It is unfortunate that after independence, attempt have been made to negate the contribution of many great people as well as the culture of the country. The independence struggle involved efforts of lakhs of people. Attempts were also made to limit their history. But now, after decades, the country is rectifying those mistakes,” he said. The PM said that the Statue of Unity, Ambedkar Circuit, Janjatiya Gaurav Divas on Birsa Munda’ birth anniversary are some of the steps in that direction. “Today is a historic day and this is a historic place. The symbol of democracy Parliament is here, the National War Memorial is also close by, and we are paying tributes to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. Netaji, who established the first independent government in India, his statue is being unveiled here in digital form today. Soon, a granite state will replace this hologram statue,” said Narendra Modi. The Prime Minister said that disaster, as a subject, was dealt with by the Agriculture Department in the country since Ministry of Agriculture was responsible for dealing with floods, heavy rains, hailstorms and related conditions. “The 2001 earthquake in Gujarat changed that perspective. Those experiences led to formulation of Gujarat Disaster Management Act. Centre took inspiration from the law and formulated the Disaster Management Act,” added the PM. Talking about various steps taken to alter the approach to deal with disasters in the country, the PM said that the government has focused on ‘reform’ together with relief, rescue and rehabilitation. “We strengthened, modernized, expanded NDRF across the country. From space technology to planning and management, best possible practices were adopted. The youth are coming forward for NDMA schemes like ‘Aapda Mitra’. If disaster occurs, people do not remain as victims only, they become volunteers and fight disasters. Disaster management is no longer a government job, but it has become a model of sabka prayas,” he said. Prime Minister also conferred seven Subhas Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskars, for the years 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022. The award carried a cash prize of Rs 51 lakh and a certificate in case of an institution and Rs 5 lakh and a certificate in case of an individual, Home Ministry said in a statement. For the year 2022, Gujarat Institute of Disaster Management (in the Institutional category) and Professor Vinod Sharma (in the Individual category) have been selected for the Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskar for their excellent work in Disaster Management, the Home Ministry said in a statement. Government has instituted the annual Subhas Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskar to recognize and honour the invaluable contribution and selfless service rendered by individuals and organizations in the field of disaster management.
