Melbourne : Akash Deep has shared his thoughts on the unforgettable moment in the third Test at Gabba, Brisbane, where he and Jasprit Bumrah’s gritty 47-run partnership helped India avoid a follow-on against Australia.
India, led by Rohit Sharma, found themselves in deep trouble on Day 4, with the score reading 213/9. In the midst of this crisis, Akash Deep, batting at No. 11, displayed remarkable composure, scoring 31 runs off 44 balls. His valuable contribution, alongside Bumrah, allowed India to avoid the follow-on and secure a draw, keeping the five-match series level at 1-1.
Reflecting on the situation, Akash said his primary focus was simply to survive at the crease, not to worry about the follow-on. “I wasn’t thinking about the follow-on. My mindset was just to stay at the crease and not get out. Lower-order contributions of 20-30 runs are extremely valuable, and that’s what I aimed for,” he explained.
Once Akash hit Pat Cummins for a boundary over gully, the Indian dressing room erupted in celebration, knowing the follow-on was avoided. “It lifted the whole team’s confidence, and we all enjoyed that moment,” Akash added.
Though Akash Deep didn’t feature in the first two Tests, he replaced Harshit Rana for the third Test and played a crucial role in both bowling and batting. In the first innings, he was unlucky not to take more wickets but made amends in the second innings, picking up key scalps of Nathan McSweeney and Mitchell Marsh.
Akash also credited Bumrah for his guidance throughout the tour. “This is my first time in Australia, and Jasprit bhai’s advice has been invaluable. He told me to focus on my discipline and not get too excited. Just repeat what you do in India, and it will work here,” he said, highlighting the importance of Bumrah’s experience in tough conditions.
The partnership between Akash and Bumrah, a symbol of determination, was one of the most memorable moments of India’s resilient fight in the Gabba Test.
