1804 – The first self-propelling steam engine or steam locomotive was tested at the Pen-y-Darren ironworks on its normally horse-drawn tramline. It was able to pull a load of 15 tons at a speed of about 5 mph. However, the cast-iron rails of the tramways of those days were not strong enough to support the weight of his new machine and the experiment was soon abandoned (pic credit-wirinfixhovers..net).

1811 – Humphry Davy introduced the name “chlorine” from the Greek word for “green,” for the bright yellow green gas chemists then knew as oxymuriatic gas.

1858 – The first electrical burglar alarm installation in the U.S.

1866 – The first woman dentist in the U.S. to obtain a D.D.S. degree from a dental college graduated. Lucy B. Hobbs (Mrs. Taylor). Being a woman, Hobbs had been originally turned down by many schools.

1878 – The first U.S. telephone directory, listing about 50 names, was issued.

1902 – Dr. Harvey Cushing, the first Ohio  (US) born  brain surgeon, performed his first brain operation. He revolutionized Brain tumor operation procedures. He is also  called Father of Neurosurgery. (pic credit-pacificneuroscienceinstitute.org).

1931 – Alka-Seltzer, an effervescent antacid and pain reliever first marketed. This was a tablet with aspirin and sodium bicarbonate as the main ingredients.

1983 – More than 600 people were killed in Assam after student agitators protesting the immigration of Muslim refugees from Bangladesh attempted to stop state elections.

1994 – Whirlpool Corporation began production of an energy efficient refrigerator. It had an efficiency 25% better than the U.S. law required. By removing freon, the destructive effect on ozone in the atmosphere by that chemical was eliminated.

2013 – 21 people are killed and 54 are injured in a bombing in Hyderabad.

2018 – Popular romantic hero of South and Hindi movies,  Kamal Haasan launches a new political party – Makkal Needhi Mayyam in Tamil Nadu.

Born:  1938 – Hari Krishna Shastri. Eldest son of late Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. He was elected to Lok Sabha in 1967 (Allahabad), in 1980 and 1984 (Fatehpur)  and was a Union Minister in Rajiv Gandhi govt.

1942 – Jayshree Gadkar. Popular Marathi actress who played Kaushalya’s  role in Ramanand Sagar’s  TV epic Ramayan.  She also acted in Sampoorna Ramayan, Luv Kush serials and Marathi films (pic credit-alchetron.com).

1961 – Abhijit Vinayak  Banerjee. Indo-American economist  working with Ford Foundation. He won the Nobel Prize for Economy in 2019. He has written several boopks and paoers on micro-economics, economic research, political economy etc. His most popular  book is Good Economics for Hard Times (pic credit-yourstory.com).  

1964 –  Vishnu Deo Sai.  Chattisgarh politician, a four time BJP  Lok Sabha member and now the Chief Minister of the state since 2023.

1976 -Priya Sachdev Kapoor.  Indo-British business woman, model, TV actress. She married Sanjay Kapur, ex-husband of  popular actress Karishma Kapoor after her divorce.

RIP…. 1991 – Nutan,  popular Bollywood film actress, daughter of  legendary actor, director, producer of  early movies of 1930s to 1950s  Shobhana Samath. Nutan started her cine  journey from  Hamari Beti in 1950 and continued with Bandini, Sujata, Seema,  Milan,  Anari, Chhalia, Khandaan, Saraswati Chandra, Saudagar,  Paying Guest, Main Tulsi Tere Angan Ki, Kranti etc. over 70 films.  She won Miss Mussoorie in 1952, 4 Filmfare and a Padam Shri awards. Her sister Tanuja and son Mohnish Bahl are also popular film, TV actors.

You may have known….  Metal fabricating industries such as copper were also initiated. A wide variety of engineering industries like machine tools, machinery manufacture in respect of cotton, tea, and  oil processing industries, electrical equipment, vanaspati manufacturing, power, alcohol, synthetic resin and plastic industries also flourished. However, some other industries including diesel engines, pumps, sewing machines and electric fans suffered a setback (pic credit-Getty images).
