1895 – Volleyball invented by W G Morgan in Massachusetts.
1946 – Demonstrations were held against the trial of the INA men by British Govt. . The ratings an
d some units of the Royal Indian Navy rise in open Mutiny in Mumbai harbours. Some units of Indian National Army (Azad Hind Fauz) led by Netaji Subhas Bose and his commanders alongwith Japanese forces pushed British army at Irrawady near Kohima from August 01, 1944 to Feb. 20, 1945 but they could not sustain advantage and lost to powerful well equipped British soldiers and lost the battle and thousands of their fighters. 1971 – Apollo 14 Mission returns to the Earth with about 94 pounds of samples from Moon’s surface (pic credit-NASA).
1991 – Japanese nuclear accident. Japan’s worst nuclear accident up to this date happened at Mihama. Some radioactivity was released to the atmosphere and MITI reported later that the accident was caused by human error. No deaths resulted.
2009 – Supreme Court of India orders removal of illegal structures around Taj Mahal.
Born today … 1922 – CP Krishnan Nair. Freedom fighter, ex-Army Captain and founder businessman of Leela

1984 – Rose Leslie. Popular Scottish actress, Played as Yigritte in HBO TV fantasy show Game of Thrones, The Last Witch Hunter, Morgan, The Last Witch Hunter etc. She has won BAFTA, Screen Actors Guild award etc.

1984 – Balasaraswathi, most popular Indian classical Carnatic dancer of 20th century. Spotted by legendary classic dance Guru Uday Shankar in Kanchipuram and Thanjavur court and mesmerised audience in East Asia, Europe and American by her dance and won much accolades. She was awarded Sangeet Natak Akademy award and Padam Bhushan in 1977. She also figured in Satyjit Ray’s short documentary Bala in 2006.
2006 – Nadira, popular Baghdasd born Jewish- Indian actress of 19
50s to 2000s. She acted in Mauzi, Aan, Shri 420, Awara, Kala Bazaar, Sapno Ka Saudagar, Talash, Raja Jani, Julie, Chaal Baaz, Ashiq Hoon Baharon Ka, Pakeezah, Josh etc. mostly in Vampish roles. She won a Filmfare and a National Film award. As one of the highest paid actor, Nadira was the first heroine to have a Rolls-Royce Maybach S650 in 1960 (pic credit-Spotboys.com).

The revolution in the manufacturing sphere led to the ‘death toll’ of traditional village handicrafts and cottage 
industries. Thousands of artisans were rendered jobless as their manufacturers could not compete with the fine and low cost goods manufactured in modem industries. A near chaos prevailed in villages. Goldsmiths, blacksmiths and weavers began to starve. Thus, modem industry eroded the strong traditional industrial base.
