25 Devotees injured, some fatalities likely; Akharas delay Amrit Snan on Mauni Amavasya

Prayagraj: A  stampede near the Sangam Ghat in Prayagraj  has been reportedly this morning, due to devotees rushing towards their  preferred Ghats, for holy  Snan (dip) breaking the  security  cordons in an attempt  to garner first opportunity.  5-10 amublances have been pressed into action and about 30 injured  have been moved to nearby  Akhara hospitals.  Unconfirmed reports say 5-8 dovotees are serious or succumbed to their injuries in the stampede.

Nirwani Ani Akhara Naga sadhus, who were  listed  to  take  first  dip in the morning have  postponed their movement and other Akharas have also  decided to delay their march to the Ghats until the restless crowd  settles down. It is expected all the 13  Akharas will be able to take their holy dip by the evening.  About 8-10 crores devotees are expected to take the 2nd Amrit Snan today, the 29th January being the Mauni Amavasya.

The Akhara Administration has appealed to the media to avoid spreading rumors and  making unconfirmed reports of the incident, which may more panic in the arena and across the Nation.  The Kumbh mangement has also requested devotees  to take their dip at the nearest Ghat instead of trying to reach Triveni Ghat or other preferences.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi dialed Chief  the Minister Yogi to know the situation and  monitor relief measures personally. Meanwhile Home Minister Amit Shah has also called up the CM and Kumbh administration  to rush relief and rescue measures in the disturbed area. The Home Minister has promised all  assistance and reflief support  required.         —–(Editor)
