Trump Fires Justice Department Lawyers Who Prosecuted Him
Move Follows Acting Attorney General’s Conclusion on Trust and Loyalty to the President’s Agenda
Washington : President Donald Trump has fired more than a dozen Justice Department lawyers involved in prosecuting him, citing their inability to be trusted in implementing his agenda. This action comes amid his efforts to exert greater control over the department.
Trump’s administration, under the direction of Acting Attorney General James McHenry, dismissed the lawyers who were part of the federal prosecution led by Special Counsel Jack Smith. McHenry justified the firings by asserting Trump’s constitutional authority as the chief executive and his right to make changes within the department.
The lawyers were involved in the two federal cases against Trump, which were dropped following his November election win. McHenry’s decision to remove them is part of a broader effort by Trump to secure loyalty and control within the Justice Department.
The firings coincided with an internal review of felony obstruction charges against participants in the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Additionally, a broader reshuffling of senior Justice Department officials has taken place, including the resignation of key figures involved in advising Smith’s prosecution.
The actions reflect Trump’s ongoing efforts to assert influence over the Justice Department and retaliate against those he views as responsible for his legal troubles.
