1848 – Gold was discovered in California. This initiated the famous Gold Rush in California. It is estimated that over 7,50,000 pounds of Gold (worth $ 192 million at those times rates) was extracted from this area in about 7 years.
1857 – The University of Calcutta is formally founded as the first full-fledged university in South Asia.
1900 – Newcastle Badminton Club, world’s oldest, forms in England.
1924 – Russian city of St Petersburg renamed Leningrad; it was changed back in 1991.
1935 – 1st canned beer, “Kruger Cream Ale,” is sold by American company Kruger Brewing Co.
1937 – Gandhi announces that he will retire from politics.
1950 – The original Microwave Oven patent was issued to its inventor Percy LeBaron Spencer under the title “Method of Treating Foodstuffs.”
1950 – ‘Jana Gana Mana….’ was accepted as the National Anthem of the country.
1966 – Indira Gandhi becomes Prime Minister the only second woman in modern history to head a government.
1989 – 1st reported case of AIDS transmitted by heterosexual oral sex.
2023 – Adani Enterprises owned by Gautam Adani, world’s third richest man, loses $108 billion in value after investment firm Hindenburg Research publishes report alleging stock manipulation and accounting fraud (this firm has closed shop recently and Adani Ent. has regained most of its losses) .

1921 – General TN Raina MVC, SM, the 10th Army Chief of India from 1975 to 1978. He commanded a brave battle in 1962 ass a Brigadier, against Chinese troops in Chushul and saved the region from going into the aggressor’s control. He also commanded Khulna sector during Bangladesh War as Lt. Gen. (General Officer Commanding). He’s believed to have refused to obey PM Indira Gandhi’s orders during Emergency. Also served as Indian High Commisioner to Canada, in 1979-80 and was awarded Padam Bhushan.
1943 – Sharon Tete. American actor known for films like The Wrecking Crew, Twelve Plus One, Fearless Vampire Killers, Pardon Me, Your Teeth Are in My Neck, Valley of Dolls and Eye of the Devil etc. (pic credit-Instagram)
1945 – Subhash Ghai, film producer, director, actor, scriptwriter, Araadhana music director, known as Showman after legendary Raj Kapoor. Ghai debuted as actor in Taqdeer (1967), Araadhana, Umang, Gumrah and went on to produce and direct blockbusters like Kalicharan, Vidhata, Karma, Saudagar, Taal, Hero, Meri Jang, Ram Lakhan, Pardes, Yaden, Aitraj, Iqbal etc. under his banner Mukta Arts. He startede a Film Training Institute Whistling Woods International in 2008. He has a project for makinmg biopic Osho Rajneesh in hand with an Italian production company. Ghai has won a National Film and 3 Filmfare awards and IFA, Business, Screen awards. He was also honored with Lifetime Achievement awards in 2019 by Diorama International and in 2022 by Filmfare.
1981 – Riya Sen, Bengali model and Bollywood actor is the grand daughter of legendary heroine Suchitra Sen and daughter of Moon Moon Sen. Riya has acted in Bengali, Hindi, English , Telugu and Malyalam films like Nouka Dubi, Kashmkash, Zindgi 50-50 and Hero 420 etc.
RIP…. 1566 – Humayun, the 2nd Mughal King. He ruled over north Indian areas from Afghanistan, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh upto Bengal between between 1530-40 and 1555-56. He had slipped on the staircase of a library being constructed at the Old Fort. and died after 2 days.
1966 – Homi J Bhabha, legendary Indian physicist known as Fathe of Indian Nuclear program and credited to set up India’s Atomic Power plant BARC. He was awarded Padam Bhushan in 1954 and was nominated for Nobel Prize in Physics in 1951 and 1955-56 but was not awarded.
2011 – Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, popular Indian classical singer, known for Khayal, Bhajan and
devotional songs. He was awarded Sangeet Natak Akademy and other honors and Bharat Ratna in 2009.
You may have known….In Assam, a jungle in 1840, by 1900 had 4,000,000 acres under cultivation, especially in tea plantations.
