New Delhi : Russian President Vladimir Putin paid tribute to former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, describing him as an “outstanding statesman” who played a pivotal role in elevating India-Russia relations to a “special and privileged strategic partnership.”
In a heartfelt condolence message on Friday, Putin praised Singh’s contributions to India’s economic development and his efforts to assert the country’s interests on the global stage. Singh, who passed away on Thursday night at the age of 92, served as India’s prime minister from 2004 to 2014 and is widely remembered as the architect of India’s landmark economic reforms.
Putin specifically recalled the significant milestone achieved during Singh’s tenure when the strategic partnership between India and Russia was formalized as a “special and privileged strategic partnership” during a visit by the Russian president to India in December 2010.
“His personal contributions to strengthening the friendly relations between our countries were immeasurable,” Putin said. “We had the opportunity to converse several times, and I will always cherish those memories.”
The Russian president also extended his condolences to Indian President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi following Singh’s passing.
Manmohan Singh’s leadership and vision continue to be remembered for shaping India’s economic trajectory and fostering stronger international ties.
