1856 – Aluminium is the most recently (1808) discovered metal in common use. Charles Dickens predicted: “Aluminium may probably send tin to the right about face, drive copper saucepans into penal servitude, and blow up German-silver sky-high into nothing.”
1928 – Clip-on tie designed.
1955 – India and the USSR affirm the Panchsheel. First Prime Minister of India JL Nehru proposed a set of Five Principals of co-operation, co-existence in the world, especially amongst neighbors. It was first signed with China (premier Zhou En-Lai) to creat friendly border relations.
1962 – Relay I, the first U.S. communications earth satellite to transmit telephone, television, teleprinter and facsimile signals was launched.
1984 – The death toll in a toxic gas leak in Bhopal, now is estimated at 2,100, and tens of thousands of residents fled the city on this day after it was announced that the Union Carbide plant would be started up again to neutralise the effect.
1989 – Kashmiri (Pak supported) militants release the daughter of then Indian Home Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed as five of their comrades freed from prison. His daughter Rubaiya was abducted by the militants to exchange their cadres from Indian prisons.
2000 – The Lok Sabha begins the Ayodhya-Babri Masjid debate.
2003 – Former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein is captured near his home town of Tikrit, during Operation Red Dawn by US forces.
2014 – Thousands of protesters march in Washington, D.C., to protest recent killings of unarmed black men (Michael Brown and others in Missouri suburb) by policemen (pic credit-STLPR).
2017 – Online dictionary Merriam-Webster’s most searched word of the year is Feminism.

1960 – Daggubati Venkatesh, Telugu actor/producer. Known for his roles in Nuvvu Nukku Nachav, Sankranti, Fun And Frustration (2), Venky Mama Vasu, , Anari, Sandhav etc. over 60 films including some Hindi as well. He has won 7 state Nandi and 6 Filmfare awards.
1955 – Manohar Parrikar, popular Goa BJP leader who was state CM for 3 terms from 2000 to 2019 and in between Union Defence Minister from 2014-17. He was an IIT qualified politician to be a Chief Minister. He was awarded Padma Bhushan posthumously.
RIP….1986 – Smita Patil, a Gujarati, Marathi and Bollywood actor. (A brilliant actress known for her portrayal of strong female characters in Indian parallel cinema in the 1970s and 1980s, she had a lot more to offer art and cinema when her life was cut short at the tragically young age of 31). Her roles in Mirch Masala, Chakra, Bhumika, Ardh Satya, Shakti, Bazaar, Namak Halal, Sadgati, Awam, Dance Dance, Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyun Aata Hai etc. brought her many laurals and awards. She won 3 Filmfare, 2 National Awards during her cinema career.
You may have known….Frozen lobsters can come back to life when thawed. Lobsters are found in fresh waters of sea , mainly Pacific Ocean. These also form a major seafood world over and tropical islands (worth over $ One billion trade).
