1801- Robert Hare presented the twenty-year-old scientist’s discovery relating to the intense production of heat with his oxyhydrogen blow-pipe, progenitor of the welding torch.

1845 – Civil engineer Robert Thompson patented pneumatic tyres in London.

1868 – Gas-lit traffic lights were first placed in operation at the corner of Bridge Street and New Palace Yard, London, England, atop a 22-ft high cast-iron pillar.

1901 – At the first Nobel Prize Award Ceremony, the king of Sweden distributed the first Nobel Prizes, in accordance with the will of inventor Alfred Nobel. The day was his death  Anniversary (pic credit-Nobel Prize Foundation).

1932 – The Indian Military Academy (IMA) was formally inaugurated by Field Marshal Sir Philip W Chetwode, Bt, GOB, KCMG, GCSI, DSO and was christened as “The Pioneer “. The crowning event was delivered in the hall, now named after him, and in the address to the trainees, he enunciated three principles: ‘the safety, honour, and welfare of your country comes first, always and ever time’, which were to guide the future officers of the Indian Army . A passage from this address has come to acquire immortality and has been adopted as the credo of the Academy.

1952 – World’s first official Family Planning programme launched in India.

1992 – The Central Government bans RSS, VHP, ISS, Bajrang Dal and Jamait-e-Islami.

2014 – James Watson, one of three scientists to co-discover DNA structure, has auctioned off the 1962 Nobel Prize medal he received for the achievement; Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov paid $4.8 million for the medal but then returned it to Watson (pic credit-The Mirror).

2019 – 1st fully electric commercial plane, a retro-fitted seaplane, completes test flight in Vancouver.

2022 – Tens of thousands of people protest in Dhaka, Bangladesh, against the government demanding resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and new elections amid cost of living crisis.

Born…. 1830 – Emily E Dickinson. Prominent American poet,  Most popular for her brilliance and integrity in life.

1878 – Chakravarti Rajagopalachari,  great social reformer, lawyer, ardent patriot, incisive thinker and eminent litterateur. He was the first Indian Governor General of Independent India and popularly known as ‘Rajaji’. He joined Indian Freedom movement opposing Rowlett Act, Vaikom Satygraha and Civil Disobedience movement on Gandhi’s call in 1930 and became a prominent Congress stalwart in Madras State (Tamil Nadu). Though later he fell out with PM Nehru and founded Swatantra Party alongwith several prominent leaders opposing Congress and  Nehru’s policies. He wrote Mahabharta, Ramayana, Upnishad  Bhagwat Gita and more books on Indian culture in Tamil and English. He was honoured with Sahitya Akademy award and Bharat Ratna in 1954.

1960 – Rati Agnihotri, veteran romantic heroine who  debuted in film industry with blockbuster  Ek Duje Ke Liye and won 2 nominations to Filmfare in 1982. Also acted in Shoukeen, Swami Dada, Coolie, Pasand Apni, Apni, Tawaif,  Rishta Kaagaz Ka, Mashaal, etc. in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu over 40 films. She was honored with several other outstanding  achievement awards.

1965 – Jayaram Subramaniam, Malayalam actor, who did  about films in Malyalee and Tamil. He’s a popular chenda percussionist, mimicry artist, and occasional playback singer too. His major films out of 200 are Summer in Bethelm, Ulakam Chuttum Valakam, Thuppakki etc.  He has won a Kerala State Tamil Nadu State and 4 Filmfare South awards. (pic credit-Instgram)

1978 – Anjana Sukhani. South film actor, model who has acted in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and some Hindi movies like Bejawada, Allah Ke Bande, Department, Shandaar, Coffee with D, Good Newws, Mumbai Saga etc. Has won 2 Filmfare, 6 nominations and some regional awards.

1982 – Shilpa Anand (Ohanna Shivanand), a model and film/television actor. Known for popular  TV role  viz.,  as Dr. Ridhima Gupta in Dr.Shilpa  Malhotra, she has also acted in Dil Mil Gayye, Main Rony Aur Jony, Iqrar by Chance, Vishnu,  Bloddy Isshaq, Yeh Hai  Lollipop  etc. She  has won several  nominations  for her  acting  excellence.

RIP….  1896 – Alfred Bernhard Nobel, the Swedish chemist and inventor who invented dynamite and other  more powerful explosives. Nobel amassed a huge fortune, much of which he left in a fund in endowment for  annual prizes for excfellence, discoveries and  social causes,  that bear his name, as Nobel Prize.
