Mohali MC Chief Warns Eateries Against Encroaching Public Spaces, Threatens Legal Action
Commissioner T Benith takes a firm stance on illegal encroachments by restaurants and shops in prominent markets, urging adherence to rules.
MOHALI:– In a bid to keep the city’s markets free from illegal encroachments, Municipal Corporation (MC) Commissioner T Benith on Saturday issued a stern warning to restaurant and shop owners who have been encroaching on public spaces in prominent markets.
Warning Against Illegal Encroachments:
During an inspection of the markets in Sector-67 and 68, as well as Phases-1, 3, 5, and 7, Commissioner Benith took a strong stand against eateries and other establishments that have been occupying footpaths and roads with sitting arrangements for customers, in violation of city regulations. He directed owners of restaurants, eateries, and booths to remove encroachments from the public corridors meant for pedestrian movement.
Encroachment on Roads and Footpaths:
The Commissioner specifically addressed the issue of shops that have illegally extended their dining spaces onto roads, obstructing pedestrian traffic. Mohali police had also raised concerns, urging the Commissioner to take action against the illegal seating arrangements set up by eateries on public roads. Under the city’s regulations, food can only be served inside the premises of an establishment, and sitting arrangements on the road are strictly prohibited.
Action Plan:
Benith, accompanied by Assistant Commissioner Ranjit Kumar, Corporation Engineer Kamaldeep Singh, Head Draftsman Mukhtiyar Singh, and Sanitary Inspector Jagroop Singh, emphasized the importance of keeping the roads and footpaths clear for pedestrians. He also instructed the concerned officers to remove encroachments promptly and ensure compliance with the regulations.
City’s Effort for Cleaner, Safer Streets:
The crackdown on encroachment is part of a broader effort to ensure that the streets of Mohali remain clean, safe, and accessible to all residents. The Municipal Corporation is committed to maintaining public spaces for pedestrian use and discouraging unlawful occupation by businesses.
As the Commissioner’s warning has made clear, eateries and shops that fail to comply with the rules could face legal action.
