Ambala Administration Enforces Section 144 Ahead of Farmers’ Delhi March
Farmers at Shambhu Border Resolve to March to Delhi on December 6 Despite Restrictions.
Ambala: Farmers stationed at the Shambhu border have reaffirmed their decision to march to Delhi on December 6 with various unions participating in the protest. Following this announcement, the Ambala district administration has enforced Section 144 of the Indian Penal Code, prohibiting gatherings of five or more individuals to maintain law and order.
The Deputy Commissioner’s office has officially informed key farmer leaders, including Swarn Singh, All India Chairman of the Farmers’ Labor Struggle Committee from Amritsar, and Jaswinder Singh, Suba President of the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Ekta Azad) from Sangrur, about the restrictions.
Farmer leader Tejbir Singh stated that the march from Shambhu border to Delhi would be peaceful and conducted in coordination with other unions. He added that no administrative obstacle would deter their commitment to advancing the farmers’ movement, regardless of the challenges.
Farmers Seek Delhi Police Clearance
Deputy Commissioner Parth Gupta mentioned that information about the march was obtained during recent press conferences held by the farmer unions. He reiterated that protests or demonstrations in Delhi require prior approval from the Delhi Police. Once the permission is secured, the Ambala administration must be notified accordingly.
Court Orders and Appeal for Resolution
The Deputy Commissioner reminded the unions of the July 24, 2024, High Court order to maintain the status quo at the Shambhu border to prevent any untoward incidents. He urged both parties to resolve the matter through mutual dialogue, emphasizing that the Supreme Court had also set up a committee to mediate discussions with all stakeholders.
Additionally, under Section 69 of the Haryana Police Act, 2007, police officers are authorized to issue guidelines for managing public gatherings and processions.
Administration’s Appeal
Considering these developments, the administration has appealed to the farmer unions to reconsider their protest plans and the proposed march to Delhi. The authorities aim to prevent disruptions and ensure public safety while advocating for peaceful solutions.
