BJP’s Scramble for Rajya Sabha Ticket in Haryana as Bypoll Approaches
Kuldeep Bishnoi Leads the Pack of Contenders as BJP's Rajya Sabha Seat in Haryana Becomes Hotly Contested
Haryana : A Rajya Sabha Bypoll Triggers a Scramble for Ticket in Haryana
Intense lobbying has begun within the Haryana BJP as the Election Commission (EC) has announced a Rajya Sabha bypoll on December 20, following the resignation of Krishan Lal Panwar, who vacated the seat after being elected to the Haryana Assembly. The bypoll has attracted several senior party leaders, each vying for the coveted Upper House berth.
Among the top contenders for the seat is Kuldeep Bishnoi, a three-time MLA and two-time Lok Sabha MP, who recently met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi to push for his nomination. Other prominent aspirants include state BJP chief Mohan Lal Badoli, former Karnal MP Sanjay Bhatia, former Cabinet Minister Om Prakash Dhankar, and former MP Sunita Duggal.
Despite the strong competition, the BJP is set to win the seat unopposed, thanks to its overwhelming majority in the Haryana Assembly, with 48 out of 90 MLAs and the support of three Independent legislators. However, the final decision rests with the BJP’s central leadership, which will choose the nominee after the poll notification is issued on December 3.
Bishnoi, whose son Bhavya Bishnoi recently lost the family-held Adampur seat, is determined not to miss this opportunity. However, insiders believe his position has weakened due to the family’s distancing from party events following the loss. Other contenders, such as Bhatia and Badoli, also have their own claims, with Bhatia being a known loyalist of Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.
The Rajya Sabha bypoll is seen as a crucial decision for the BJP as it looks to reward its loyalists and strengthen its representation in the Upper House ahead of the 2024 elections.
