Gukesh Clinches First Win Over Defending Champion Ding Liren in World Chess Championship
The 18-year-old Indian Grandmaster outplays Liren in the third round, drawing level in the World Championship.
Indian Grandmaster D. Gukesh secured his first-ever victory over defending champion Ding Liren in the 2024 World Chess Championship, leveling the score at 1.5 points each after three rounds. The 18-year-old’s brilliant opening preparation and sharp play led him to a winning position after 37 moves.
In a game that showcased impeccable strategy, Gukesh outwitted the Chinese champion, who struggled with time management. By move 13, Gukesh had a commanding lead on the clock, having spent just four minutes on his moves compared to Liren’s 66 minutes.
Gukesh’s opening play followed a rare variation of the Queen’s Gambit, drawing inspiration from former World Champion Vladimir Kramnik’s ideas, which had also been used by top Indian player Arjun Erigaisi. Liren’s time trouble and Gukesh’s relentless pressure in the middle game proved decisive as the Indian Grandmaster clinched the victory.
