1834 – The electric motor was invented by Thomas Davenport.

1895 – Alfred Nobel had his will drawn up in Paris, then deposited in a bank in Stockholm. In it, he provided for most of his fortune to be put in trust to establish the Nobel Prizes.

1962 – Britain agreed to supply arms to India.

1972 – Bhutto reports the release of 616 Indian prisoners captured in the Indian-Pakistani dispute.

1979 – 1st day-night one-day cricket international, Australia vs. WI.

1701 – Anders Celsius, Swedish astronomer who is famous for the temperature scale he developed.

1907 – Harivanshrai Bachchan,  born in village  ‘Babu Patti’ near Allahabad, now renamed Pryagraj.  He wrote and  recited  Hindi  poems in Kavita Sammelans, famous for his collection Madhushala.He was the father of Bollywood’s  icon  Amitabh  Bachchan.

1940 – Bruce Lee.  Legendary Chinese-American  martial arts (Kung Fu) master, fighter, film maker and philosopher. He made blockbuster films like Enter the Dragon (grossed over  $ 400 million), The Big Boss, The Fist of Fury, Way of the Dragon, Game of Death, Bruce Lee Fights Back, Bruce Lee: A Warrior’s Journey etc.  He was nominated Times 100 Most Influential Persons of the Century, Hong Kong Film Award  and several other awards. He died  mysteriously  in Hong Kong on July 20. 1973 at the age of 32  only.

1952 – Bappi Lahiri, film score writer, composer. Known for mixing Disco, Jazz with Indian music notes.  Composed over 5000 songs in 500 Hindi,  Bengali Telugu films like Disco Dancer, Chalte Chalte, Dance Dance, Namak Halal, Sharabi, Tohfa, Prem Pratigya, Rowdi Alludu, Mangaldeep etc. He won a Filmfare award and was nominated six times, Golden Lotus and  Sangeet Samrat. Also Lifetime Achoevement award in 2018. He was also known for  stylish dressing with Golden and precious jewelery, as he believed his spiritual connection with Gold. .

1986 – Suresh Raina, agressive laft hand batter and off-spinner.He scored a century (120)  on debut,  played 18 Tests as also went on to captain  Indian team in 3 Tests. Played for Chennai  Super Kings and Gujarat Lions  in IPL format.

RIP….1859 – D. V. Purohit (Nanasaheb), veteran freedom fighter and revolutionary.( known as Dhondu Pant at birth). He led the First  Freedom Movement in 1857  from Kanpur. He was the  adopted son of Baji Rao Peshwa II.

2002 – Shivmangal Singh Suman. Famous Hindi poet, writer whose popular poems were :  मैं नहीं आया तुम्हारे द्वार… मैं नहीं आया तुम्हारे द्वार पथ ही मुड़ गया था। गति मिली मैं चल पड़ा · पर आंखें नहीं भरी… कितनी बार तुम्हें देखा पर आंखें नहीं भरीं। सीमित उर में चिर….. etc. Worked as Vice Chancellor and   on diplomatic posts. He was awarded Padam Shri.

2008 – VP Singh, former Prime Minister (1989-90) for National Front government after resigning Rajiv Gandhi led Congress Party on Bofors bribery scandal.  He was also Chief Minister of UP and Union Finance Minister under Rajiv Gandhi. He is known for supporting Mandal Commission  leading  social conflict in the country and fall of his goverment in 11 months.
