Fibonacci Day is observed on November 23 annually to honour one of the most influential mathematicians of the Middle Ages namely Leonardo Bonacci. He was born in the Republic of Pisa (Italy) in 1170. (pic credit-BBC)
1863 – Patent granted for a process of making colour photographs.
1889 – The first jukebox was installed when an entrepreneur named Louis Glass and his business associate, William S. Arnold, placed a coin-operated Edison cylinder phonograph in the Palais Royale Saloon in San Francisco. Known as “Nickel-in-the-Slot,” the machine was an instant success, earning over $1000 in less than six months.
1897 – A U.S. patent was issued for a pencil sharpener to its black American inventor, John Lee Love.
1936 – 1st issue of Life, picture magazine created by Henry R Luce, hit newsstands.
1948 – The first U.S. patent for a lens to provide zoom effects for television cameras was issued to F.G. Back as a “varifocal lens for cameras.” His Zoomar lens was adjustable for close-ups or long-distance shots without requiring the camera be moved toward or away from the object televised.
1948 – The besieged garrison of Poonch was relieved a full year after its siege. Thus a firm grip had been established all the way from Pathankot on the major portions of this province.
1964 – Dr. Michael E. DeBakey of Houston performed the first successful coronary artery bypass graft procedure (pic credit-The Lancet).
1971 – China People’s Republic seated in United Nations Security Council.
2014 – In a potential attempt to claim sovereignty, China is building an island in the South China Sea in an area claimed by several nations; sources speculate that the island may be used to support an airstrip and military activities.
2018 – US Federal Climate report estimates climate change will reduce economy by 10% by 2100 with $141 billion cost from heat-related deaths, $118 billion from sea level rise.

1897 – Nirad C. Chaudhuri, Kishoreganj (now in Bangladesh) Indian scholar, novelist, writer. He wrote many successful books like The Autography of An Unknown Indian, A Passage to England, The Continent of Circe, Thy Hand, Great Anarch, Culture in the Vanity Bag, Hinduism a Religion to Live By , The East is the East, The west is the West etc. He was awarded Sahitya Akademi Award in India, and CBE by the British govt.
1900 – Durga Das, famous social reformer and journalist. Correspondent for The Associated Press for long. Editor of Times of India and The Hindustan Times, established his news agency INFA and was co-founder of Press Club of India.
1926 – Sathya Sai Baba, Hindu universalist renaissance charismatic guru, educationalist and worker of miracles.
1930 – Geeta Dutt, most popular romantic actor, singer who sang over 1400 Hindi and more Bengali, Punjabi, Nepali and Bhojpuri songs, . She acted in Aar Paar, Pyaasa, Baazi, CID etc. and sang very popular songs during 1950s-1970s. Married legendary director/producer Guru Dutt. She won many cine awards and honors including Dada Saheb Phalke in 2000 and Padma Vibhushan in 2008.

1937 – Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose, Indian physicist and plant physiologist who investigated the properties of very short radio waves, wireless telegraphy, and radiation-induced fatigue in inorganic materials. He did great research on wireless, electromagnetic effect etc. but he was not awarded Nobel Prize and given to G. Marconi. in 1909.
