1666 – The English physician Samuel Pepys successfully tried blood transfusion between dogs. It later proved very useful for humans (pic credit-Getty Images).
1681 – East India Company declared Bengal as a separate presidency.
1896 – The Locomotives on Highways Act 1896 took effect in Britain. It raised the country speed limit to 14 mph (12 mph in some towns) for horseless carriages under 3 tons unladen weight.
1906 – Roosevelt becomes 1st U.S. President to visit a foreign country (Panama).
1910 – The first airplane flight from a ship was made in by pilot Ely US. The runway was 83 feet long, with a five degree slope, but because the plane itself was 57 feet long, the available runway for take-off was only 26 feet. Some two months later, 18 Jan 1911, Ely made another first in history when he landed on
1968 – 1st European lung transplant.996 – Competition Post Card’, a new category of postcard, priced Rs. 2 introduced in India.
1994 – 1st public trains run through the Channel Tunnel linking England and France under the English Channel.
2022 – Earliest evidence of fire being used to cook by humans found in study of fish remains 780,000 years ago at Gesher Benot Ya’aqov in northern Israel.

1889 – Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first PM. Ruled India from m1947 till his death in 1964. (To commemorate his birthday, this day is observed as ‘Children’s Day’ from 1957).
1944 – Aditya Vikarm Birla, Business magnate. Managed and expanded into mining steel, aluminium, cement insurance, finacial services, fibre, textiles and readymade retail, trading and entertainment. The group started in 1857 by Seth Shiv Narayan Birla in 1857 has presence in over 25 countries worldover and has net worth of over $ 100 Billion as of August 2024.
1948 – King Charles III of Britain. Rose to the throne on May 6, 2023 at the age of 73 after death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II. Head of 14 Commonwealth countries, animal care activist. He married Diana Frances Spenser in 1981, couple has 2 sons and Charles married Camilla Parker Bowles in 2005 (pic credit-Marca.com).
1971 – Adam Craig Gilchrist. Australian attacking left hand batsman wicket-keeper, who played Also played for Deccan Chargers, Hyderabad and Punjab Kings in IPL. Also does cricket commentary in tournaments.

1967 – Kanakaiya Nayudu Colonel Cottari , cricketer (7 Tests for India in 30’s). Was first captain of Indian cricket team as batsman and medium pacer. He played First Class cricket for 47 years from 1916 to 1963 and was administrator, a tournament for Under-23 was started in his name as CK Naudu Trophy in 1973-74. He appeared in Wisden Cricketers of Year Book and was honoured with Padma Bhushan in 1956.
