1698 – East India Company purchased Calcutta, which was not more than a village at that time.
1885 – The world’s first motorcycle, designed by Gottlieb Daimler, made its first significant test-run. It had a wooden frame and wheels. (This was built as an experimental vehicle to test the new Daimler engine in a proof of concept, which was to power Daimler’s first motorised carriage the following year).
1891 – Granville T. Woods patents electric railway.
1901 – Formal inauguration of the new North-West Frontier Province created out of the Punjab.
1940 – Walt Disney begins serving as an informer for the Los Angeles office of the FBI; his job is to report back information on Hollywood subversives.
1989 – East German government opens the Berlin wall.
1990 – Chandra Shekhar Singh sworn in as 8th Prime Minister of India. Devilal was sworn in as the Deputy Prime Minister.
2022 – Afghanistan’s ruling Taliban ban women from using public parks and funfairs.

1848 – Surendranath Banerji, popularly known as Rashtraguru. He was President of the Indian National Congress twice.
1964 – Ashutosh Rana, popular Indian actor, producer, director author and TV person. He worked in Hindi, Marathi, Telugu, Kannada, Tamil, films like Vishnu Vijaya, Vishnu Sena, Avtara Purusha, Dushman, Raaz, Haasil, Kaliyug, Kasoor, LOC, Ab ke Pathan, Sangharsh, War, Bheed etc. He wrote thought proking books Ramrajya Ashutosh, Maun Muskan ki Maar, Was awarded Filmfare twice and Zee Cine award twioce. He married a famous TV presenter Renuka Shahane.
1974 – Simone Singh, Bollywood actor. Known for roles in serials Heena, Aandhi, and film Bahu Begham, Kasshish, Ek Hasina Thi, Maza Ma, She won StarDust, Indian Tellyand ITA Awards awards 3 times (pic credit-BookMyShow).

2009 – Simple Kapadia, film actor, costume designer, model was the sister of veteran Dimple Kapadia. . Known for roles in Anurodh, Ehsaas, Dulha Bikta Hai, Rudaali, Darr, Jeevan Dhara, Pyar Ke Do Pal etc. She won a National award for designing costumes in Rudaali.

Languages: Many of the principal languages of India belong to two families, the Indo-European and the Dravidian. Also, three languages of the Sino-Tibetan family have official status in the northeastern region of the country. The Dravidian languages are unique to the Indian subcontinent. They are often spoken in the south of the country. Hindi, an Indo-European language, is the most widely spoken language. Hindi has various different dialects. Other major languages of India are Bengali and Marathi.
However, 350 million Indian speak English as a second language and much of the upper middle class in large cities speak English as the usual language for daily communication. It is said the spoken language also impacts one’s behaviour. (pic credit-Ted Ideas)
