Doon University: Students to Study Hinduism from Next Session, Science to Be Taught Along with Vedas and Vedanta

Doon University will introduce a new MA program in Hindu Studies starting from the academic session 2026, offering students a unique opportunity to study Hinduism along with science, Vedas, and Vedanta. The university will become the first in Uttarakhand to offer this specialized course, which will be taught in a dedicated department focusing on ancient knowledge, religious science, and Hindu scriptures.
This initiative follows the lead of Banaras Hindu University (BHU), which introduced a two-year MA course in Hindu Studies in 2021, and Delhi University (DU), which started postgraduate and PhD programs in the same field in 2023. The introduction of this course at Doon University comes after the approval of the proposal in a recent Cabinet meeting, marking a significant step in the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes the study of Indian culture and languages.
The course will cover various aspects of Hinduism, including the Ramayana, Mahabharata, Vedas, Vedanta, Sanskrit literature, Arya Samaj, Jainism, Buddhism, and the life philosophies of Swami Vivekananda. Students will also study Hindu geography, architecture, archaeology, ancient military science, classical music, and drama.
However, the university is facing challenges in finding qualified professors for this new course, and efforts are underway to bring trained faculty from BHU and DU. The administration is also working on finalizing the number of seats and faculty positions.
Under the guidance of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the establishment of the Hindu Studies Department has been a priority for the state government, with the course expected to offer vast career opportunities in India and abroad. Graduates will be able to work as spiritual guides, Hindu researchers, professors, or in various roles related to Hindu studies and management.
