1878 – Edison makes electricity available for household use.

1922 – British Broadcasting Company (BBC) founded, later called British Broadcasting Corporation.

1952 – Vinoo Mankad takes 13 Pakistan wkts to win 1st India-Pak clash.

1954 – Texas Instruments Inc announces the first transistor radio. (Their development was made possible by the invention of the transistor in 1947. They became the most popular electronic communication device in history).

1955 – The Track & Field names Jesse Owens all-time track athlete.

2007 – After 8 years in exile, Benazir Bhutto returns to her homeland Pakistan. The same night, suicide attackers blow themselves up near Bhutto’s convoy, killing over 100 in the cheering crowd, including 20 police officers. Bhutto escaped uninjured.

2011 – Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit is released by Hamas.

2013 – Saudi Arabia becomes the second country (after India) to turn down a seat on the UN Security Council in protest over Syria.

1950 – Om Puri, Bollywood actor, youngest of the 3 Puri brothers (Madan Puri, Amrish Puri ) of Indian cineworld. He has acted in many Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, Bengali, Kannada, Tamil, Gujarati  and English films like Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, The Parol Officer, George, The Indian, Farz, Maqbool, Lakshay, Mangal Pandey, the Rising. Gadar, Aghaat etc. He was awarded Padam Shri, OBE and several awards like Filmfare.

1977 – Kunal Kapoor, a model and Bollywood actor. Known for films like Rang De Basanti, Aaja Nachiye, Koi Jaane Na, The Empire etc. Has won a StarDust, a Filmfare and pther awards.

1984 – Freida Pinto, Bollywood model, actor made debut in Slumdog Millionaire  and won Academy Award, Also acted in Hindi, American , British films like Immortals, The Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Intrusion etc. Has won several awards.

RIP….

1983 – Vijay Manjrekar, a fine cricketer, wicketkeeper, off-spinner and good fielder. (55 Tests, 3208 runs). His son Sanjay Manjrekar is also a fine player, selector and coach of Indian cricket team and commenator.  (now retired).

1995 – Baby Naaz (Salma Baig), popular child actor. Known for roles in Boot Polish, Naadi Shah, Laajwanti, Do Phool, Kaagaz Ke Phool,  Chaar Dsrvesh and  Pyar Ka Bandhan etc. Won  Cannes Film Festival awards in 1955 and other awards. (pic credit-IMDb) 

2004 – Veerappan (Koose Munusami), fierce bandit and Sandal  smuggler of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. He poached on elephants in the region for Tusk smuggling from 1968-2004.  It is believed state governments had fixed a prize of Rs. 20 crores for catching or providing info on his movements.  (pic credit-FaceBook).

Disposal of the Placenta (Fetus): The placenta is an organ that develops in the uterus during pregnancy, providing essential oxygen and nutrients to the growing baby. After the baby’s birth, the placenta leaves the body, having

fulfilled its purpose. Although most hospitals today simply dispose of placentas after childbirth, people from different religious and cultural traditions throughout history and to this day have honoured the organ’s role in nourishing the foetus. These rituals include burying, eating (which today some mothers are also choosing to do outside of a religious context) or making jewellery out of the placenta.
