1882 – University of the Punjab is founded in Lahore, in present day Pakistan.

1884 – George Eastman patents paper-strip photographic film.

1899 – Morning Post reporter Winston Churchill departs to South Africa.

1910 – Further unrest took place in Lhasa, Tibet, following the arrest of Dalai Lama’s agent by the Chinese on the Chinese frontier with India ( Potla Palace pic credit-Freepik).

1947 – Chuck Yeager in Bell XS-1 makes first supersonic flight, flying at Mach 1.015.

1956 – Dr Bhimrao Ramji, Ambedkar and about two lakh scheduled caste men and women embraced Buddhism in Nagpur.

1964 – Philips begins experimenting with colour TV.

1968 – First  live telecast from a manned US spacecraft, Apollo 7.

1989 – Indian Election Commission accepted Shiv Sena as a political party.

1991 – Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi wins Nobel Peace Prize.

2020 – A copy of William Shakespeare’s First Folio sells for a record $9.98 million at auction in New York. It’s the first collection of 36 stories and plays by the legendary English writer, novelist. Born….

1884 – Lala Har Dayal, revolutionary, nationalist and freedom fighter. Was Professor of Sanskrit at Stanford University. Founded Ghadar Party in America alongwith Sohan Singh Bhakna on July 15, 1913 for Freedom of India. He was arrested by American Govt. in March  2014.

1940 – Cliff Richards, rock vocalist. (Was born in Lucknow).

1950 – Arun Khetrapal. (Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal, PVC, was an officer of the Indian Army and a posthumous recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military decoration for valour in face of the enemy. He died in the Battle of Basantar during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971. On 16 Dec 1971,        Lt. Arun Khetarpal with his 2 remaining tanks fought off a far larger force and gunned down 10 tanks before he was killed in action).

1981 – Gautam Gambhir, veteran Indian opener. politician, philanthropist and current Head Coach of Indian cricket team. Has many records in his name. Played crucial 75 in World Cup  T20 Final  in 2007 against Pakistan and 97 in One Day World Cup Final 2011.

He scored 5 consecutive Centuries in Tests in 2009-10, a record for India and just one short of Don Bradman.  He played for Dehi Daredevils   in IPL 20s and captained KKR Kolkata twice  (2012, 2014) for Champions Trophhy.

Punjabi Wedding: On the wedding day, the bride receives a ‘chuda, the white and red coloured bangles from her maternal uncle or mama. Followed by this ritual, the Ghara Ghardoli ceremony takes place in which the bride and groom are bathed in the holy water brought from the Gurudwara. On the wedding night, the couple exchange garlands and are taken to the mandap to perform other marriage rituals (pic credit-Surfindia).
