1492 – Christopher Columbus’s expedition makes landfall on Caribbean island he names San Salvador (likely Watling Island, Bahamas). The explorer believes he has reached East Asia.
1860 – British & French troops capture Beijing. (The Second Opium War, the Second Anglo-Chinese War, the Second China War, the Arrow War, or the Franco-British expedition to China, was a war pitting the British Empire and the Second French Empire against the Qing dynasty {present day China} lasting from 185
6 to 1860).
1879 – British troops occupy Kabul, Afghanistan. (The Second Anglo–Afghan War was fought between the United Kingdom and the Emirate of Afghanistan from 1878 to 1880).
1901 – Theodore Roosevelt renames “Executive Mansion,” “The White House”. (The White House is the official residence and principal work place of the President of the US).
1928 – First use of iron lung on a young girl in Boston’s Children Hospital. (It 
was an artificial respirator that enabled her to breathe despite being paralysed by polio).
1964 – Voskhod 1 was launched by the USSR, with Col Vladimir Komarov as pilot. It was the world’s first multi-manned spacecraft, and the first to carry a scientist (Konstaintin Feoktist
ov) and a physician (Boris Yegorov) into space.
1967 – National Conference, Working Committee of Jammu and Kashmir, unanimously passed the proposal to a permanent merger of the state with India.
1999 – Pervez Musharraf takes power in Pakistan from Nawaz Sharif through a bloodless coup.

!981 – Sneha, (Suhasini Rajaram Naidu) Telegu and Tamil cine actor. Also played some roles in Malyalam and Kannada films. Won several regional film awards.

1967 – Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia also known as “Dauntless Dr
. Lohia”, freedom fighter, social reformer and socialist leader. He had founded the ‘Praja Socialist Party’ in 1952. Fought against autocratic rule of Congress under PM Indira Gandhi.
2002 – Terrorists explode two bombs in Bali’s nightclub district killing 202 and injuring 209, mostly foreign tourists ( pic credit- Getty Images).

Muslim Wedding: Nikah in Islam is read by two priests and after the consent of the couple, the pious Nikah Naama is signed. Hereafter, the assembly is addressed with Khutba-tun-nikah or the marriage sermon.
