1865 – John Hyatts patents billard ball. As substitute for an ivory ball, he combined introcellulose, camphor and alcohol, heated the mixture under pressure to make it pliable for moulding, and allowed it to harden under normal atmospheric pressure.

1933 – First synthetic detergent, “Dreft” by Procter & Gamble, goes on sale. Dreft eliminated the problem associated with soap and gently cleaning lightly soiled clothes. The company stated in 1837 in Cincinnati, Ohio state has a wide range of toilet, cosmetic, hygene and fashion products (65)  sold world over. Present market cap  of the company is $ 331.4 Billion and turn over of $ 80 B in over 180 countries.

1952 – US mediator Frank Graham told the U.N. Security Council that there was a possibility of war between India and Pakistan over Kashmir.

1957 – US President Eisenhower apologizes to the finance minister of Ghana, Komla Agbeli Gbdemah, after he is refused service in a restaurant in Dover, Delaware.

1970 – Union Government ruled out judicial probe into the death of the late PM Lal Bahadur Shastri.

1976 – Beijing reports arrest of Mao Zedong’s widow.

1978 – Rohini Khadilkar, thirteen years old, became the first woman to win the national chess championship. She ruled  Her younger sisters Vasanti and Jayashri also ruled the national and international  Chess scenes.

2014 – Malala Yousafzai & Kailash Satyarthi win the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize.

2021 – Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen says country won’t bow to Chinese pressure in defiant speech on Taiwanese National Day, day after Chinese President Xi Jinping vowed to “fulfil reunification”.

1906 – RK Narayan, writer. One of the most popular English novelist, journalist and  thinker. He wrote famous novels Malgudi Days, The Guide, The English Teacher, Swami and Friends etc. She was honored with Filmfare and Padam Vibhushan awards. Also AC Benson Medal from Royal Society of Literature (England).

1927 – Bansilal, leader of Lokdal Party. Was Haraya Chief Minister  thrice and central Defence Minister between Dec. 1975- March 1977.

1954 – Rekha Ganesan,  (Bhanurekha) most  flamboyant Bollywood actor. Started her cinema  career as a child  artist at  an  age  of 4, in a Telugu fillm, she has acted in over 180 films during her 66 years of presence on  silverscreen. She also  is known her affairs with cinema celebrities including Vinod Mehra, Sanjeev Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan. Rekha acted in Daasi, Karamyogi, Ganga Ki Saugandh, Silsila, Neeyat, Keemat Khoobsoorat, Muqaddar Ka Sikander, Namak Haram, Khoon Bhari Maang, Kaliyug  etc.  She won Filmfare 13 times, National Award  thrice and Padam Shri in  2010. 1964 – Gurudutt, legendary  Bollywood film actor, writer, choreographer  and director. He produced and directed  most successful  fims like Baazi, Pyasa, Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam,  (haudhvin ka Chaand etc. Ws awarded BFJA awasrds and several other wards. (pic credit-IWMBuzz).

1992 – Bharat Bhushan, veteran actor known for social, tragic roles in films like Barassat Ki Raat, Mirza Ghalib, Chitralekha, Baiju Bawra and Trishna serial. Was honored with National Film  and Filmfare award apart from several other awards.

2000 – The world’s first elected woman Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike died of heart attack in Colombo.

2011 – Jagjit Singh, most popular Ghazal and Bhajan singer., composer and lyricist. He sang in Punjabi, Hindi and several other languages. Was honoured with ITMA, Filmfare and  Padam Bhushan award for his contribution to art and music. (video credit-Goldmine Gaane Sune Ansune)

Maharashtrian Wedding: Prior to the wedding trousseau, the ‘Shakhar Puda’ or engagement ceremony takes place. During the wedding, the couple is separated with a silk shawl. Thereafter, the ‘Mangalashtak’ is recited and the shawl is removed.
