1889 – In Paris, the Moulin Rouge opened its doors to the public for the first time. (It is a cabaret. It is marked by a red windmill on its roof. The term ‘ Moulin Rogue’ means ‘Red Mill’. It is best known as 
the spiritual birthplace of the modern form of the can-can dance).
1927 – “Jazz Singer,” first movie with a sound track, premieres in New York.
1961 – President JFK advises Americans to build fallout shelters.
1973 – Yom Kippur War begins as Syria & Egypt attack Israel.
1985 – PT Usha sets record for 400m (Women) in 51.61 seconds at Canberra.

007 – Jason Lewis completes the first human-powered circumnavigation of the globe.
2010 – Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger launch social media app Instagram.

1779 – The Hon Mountstuart Elphinstone. Erstwhile. Erstwhile Governor of Bombay, he is credited with the opening of several educational institutions.
1946 – Vinod Khanna, popular Bollywood actor, politician. Known for films like Haath Safai, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Achanak, 
Khoon Ki Pukar, Ham Tum Aur Voh, The Burning Train, Yuvraj, Zalim, Ek Aur Ek Gyarah, Dabang etc. Left films for a while to join Osho Ashram. Won a Filmfare award and nominations. He was awarded DadaSaheb Phalke Award in 2018.

1858 – Nanasaheb Peshwa, a revolutionary of first war of independence.
1963 – Baba Kharak Singh, a lawyer, writer and freedom fighter and grand old man of Punjab. Known as First President of Central Sikh League and Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee. In Delhi a main road connecting Connaught Place with Gurudwara Rakab Ganj is named afer the great Baba to honor him.
1974 – Vengalil Krishnan Krishna Menon, freedom fighter, barrister, leader, politician, 
nationalist and member of the Lok Sabha. He had resigned as the defence minister soon after the Chinese aggression of 1962 owning responsibility.

Kannada Wedding: During the auspicious time of the wedding, the 
bride is brought to be seated at the mandap by her sisters. The face of the bride is covered with a fan made out of peacock feathers. Afterward, the parents of the bride give away their daughter by performing a ritual called ‘Dhare Herdu’ 
followed by ‘Satapadi’ which is completed by taking seven circles of the holy fire.
