1820 – The first U.S. eye hospital, was founded in New York City in two rooms by a young physician, Dr. Edward Delafield. Hundreds of people were saved from blindness at a time that certain affections of the eye had been regarded as incurable.

1862 – Lincoln receives 1st group of blacks to confer with U.S. President.

1885 – The first Japanese patent was issued to Zuisho Hotta for his formulation of an antifouling paint for ship hulls made of lacquer, powdered iron, red lead, persimmon tannin, and other ingredients.

1888 – Oliver B. Shallenberger, of Rochester, US, received a patent for the electric meter.

1893 – France issues 1st driving licenses that includes required test

1894 – The first wireless transmission of information using Morse code was demonstrated by Oliver Lodge during a meeting of the British Association at Oxford.

1938 – BBC’s 1st feature film on TV (Student of Prague).

1945 – Japan surrenders unconditionally to end WW II.

1947 – Pakistan gains independence from Britain.

1953 – The whiffle ball, a ball that curved when it was thrown, was invented by David Mullany Sr. for his 13-year-old son.

1986 – Benazir Bhutto was arrested.

1998 – Winnie Mandela sued by the South African government.

2016 – Jamaican sprint star Usain Bolt wins coveted 100m Olympic 100m gold medal in 9.81 at Rio de Janeiro Olympics – first man to win the event 3 times (pic credit-Britannica).

1920 – Air Chief Marshal Rushikesh Mulgaonkar, Former Air Chief.

Plucking hair out by the hand – Kesh Lochan of Jain saints: Most religions consider Moksha or redemption as the ultimate end of all human endeavours. Ignorance, according to Jains and Buddhists is what stands in the way. In many texts, hair is often read as a metaphor for human illusion, attachment and vanity. Upon their initiation, Jain monks and nuns renounce their worldly

 attachments by painfully pulling out each strand of hair from their heads. The wounds are then covered in dried cow dung ash to heal.
