1841 – The first U.S. patent for collapsible metal tubes was issued to an artist, John Rand. His purpose was as a “mode of preserving paints, and other fluids, by confining them in close metallic vessels so constructed as to collapse with slight pressure, and thus force out the paint or fluid confined therein through proper openings for that purpose.” (pic credit-Wikipedia)

1909 – SOS 1st used by an American ship, Arapahoe, off Cape Hatteras.

1928 – General Electric broadcast the play ‘The Queen’s Messenger’ for first time over TV and radio at the same time, called simulcast.

1946 – The first mobile long-distance car-to-car telephone conversation took place (in US).

1952 – The first artificial aortic valve was successfully fitted in the heart of a 30-yr-old patient. It was made by Dr. Charles A. Hufnagel of the Georgetown University Medical Centre in Washington (pic credit-ResearchGate).

1961 – Dadra and Nagar Haweli declared as Union Territory States.

1999 – The death of an 83-year-old man stung by a swarm of Africanized “killer” bees marked the first fatality by that cause in the state of California (USA).

2008 – Abhinav Bindra wins men’s 10m air rifle at the Beijing Olympics, the first ever individual Olympic gold medal for India, and India’s first gold medal in any Olympic event since 1980.

2016 – A Greenland shark declared oldest vertebrate animal in the world at 392 years by international team of scientists.

1916 – General Gopal Gurunath Bewur, PVSM,  9th Chief of Indian Army,  served from Jan.  15, 1973-75.

1943 – Pervaiz Musharaf, Pakistan General served as Army Chief from 1998-2007.  Alleged to have assasinated Benazir Bhutto and Bugti . He was the brain behind Kargil War between India and Pakistan. Later he removed   PM Nawaz Shariff in 1999 and assumed control of the Govt in connivance with his military officers and then president. Became 10th President of Pakistan. (Born in Delhi).

1961 – Suniel Shetty, popular Bollywood actor., producer and director. Has a production house Popcorn Entertainment Pvt. Ltd.  Done about 100 films in 30 years. He’s known for roles in Mohra, Hera Pheri film series, Dhadkan, Rakshak, Bhai etc.  Won 5 Filmfare awards for Supporting roles.

1974 – Anju Jain, former IndianWomen’s  team Wicke-keeper and now coach.  Also played  for Air India.(pic credit-Deccan Chronicle)

RIP….

1908- Khudiram Bose was hanged on this day in Central Jail at Mujaffarpur, Bihar at the age of 19 years. He along with Prafulla Chaki had planned to bomb the carriage supposed to be carrying Kingsford. Unfortunately he was betrayed and was caught and finally was sentenced to death and hanged. This day is observed as “Martyr’s Day” in memory of the great freedom fighter. Even today the soul stirring songs composed in his honour are sung by Bengali folk-singers.

1997 – Lightning killed 19 persons and injured 6 in Andhra Pradesh.

1984 – During a radio voice test President Reagan joked he “signed legislation that would outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in 5 minutes”.

Animal Weddings – Appeasing the Rain God: Just as they had shown in Lagaan, rains are a big deal in India. A lot of lives depend on it. No wonder no stone is left unturned to please the rain god into sending his showers of blessings. Frog weddings have been reported in villages across Assam and Maharashtra, while in Karnataka, donkeys are married. Some places have even reported dog weddings. These weddings are a big celebration where all Hindu marriage rituals are observed and the marriage is conducted by a priest  (pic credit-Pinterest).
