Biden drops out of 2024, backs Harris
Washington: Joe Biden withdrew from the 2024 US presidential election and backed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party’s contender on Sunday, upending the race.
The 81-year-old Biden resigned after weeks of Democratic pressure after a dismal debate performance, causing unprecedented uncertainty in the contest against Republican Donald Trump.
“While it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden wrote on X from his Delaware beach house after recovering from Covid.
Biden promised to “speak to the nation later this week in more detail about my decision.”
