Another gunfight happened on the Imphal West-Kangpokpi boundary later that day. Unknown casualties.

Four people were detained for killing Lucy Marem, a Naga woman, in Imphal East on Saturday evening. The attackers allegedly mutilated her face.

Before this episode, Manipur’s third-largest community, the Nagas, were unaffected by Meitei-Kuki ethnic violence.

The United Naga Council (UNC) condemned the killing of the innocent Naga woman, saying her perpetrators knew she was a Naga.

It urged that the state government promptly form a judicial inquiry committee, arrest all criminals, including members of a women’s group who had reportedly caught the girl and turned her over to armed men, and punish them accordingly.

“If not fulfilling our demands within 48 hours, further course of action will be initiated,” the organisation threatened.

The UNC added, “The Meitei civil society organisations will be equally held responsible for this despicable act. Thus, their job and position must be communicated.”

It called for a 12-hour “total shutdown” in Manipur’s Naga districts from 6 am to 6 pm on Monday to protest the woman’s death and honour her.

A woman was killed again. An unidentified gunman killed a Kuki woman outside Imphal on July 6.

In protest of Saturday’s torching of three LPG cylinder-laden trucks in Imphal West district and Sunday’s village arson attack, the Committee for Tribal Unity has called for a 72-hour “total shutdown” of National Highway 2, Manipur’s lifeline.
