1775 – Joseph Priestley, having discovered oxygen on 1 Aug 1774, experimented with mice in his home laboratory on whether it is necessary to support life.

1910 – Elise Deroche (Baroness de Laroche) bacame the first woman to be issued a pilot’s license by the Aero Club de France. She had made her first solo flight in 1909.

1911 – 1st International Woman’s Day. (International Woman’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Great unrest and critical debate was occurring amongst women. Women’s oppression and inequality was spurring women to become more vocal and active in campaigning for change. Then in 1908, 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights).
1930 – Mahatma Gandhi starts civil disobedience in India.
1946 – First U.S. commercial helicopter license was issued to the New York Journal-American newspaper. The helicopter, Bell 47B was used for news gathering and delivering photographs.

1965 – As part of U.S. combat forces, 3,500 Marines arrive in Vietnam. (Direct U.S. military involvement ended on 15 August 1973. The capture of Saigon by the North Vietnamese Army in April 1975 marked the end of the war, and North and South Vietnam were reunified the following year).
1994 – B737 collides with Ilyushin-86 in New Delhi, at least 8 killed.

2013 – North Korea terminates all peace pacts with South Korea.

2014 – Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 with 239 people loses contact and disappears, prompting the most expensive search effort in history and one of the most enduring aviation mysteries.

2023 – 171 trillion pieces of plastic now litter the world’s oceans, increasing from 16 trillion in 2005, estimate scientists from Gyres Institute.

Born….

1921 – Sahir Ludhiyanvi, famous film lyricist. Sahir Ludhianvi is the pen name of Abdul Hayee who is popularly known as Sahir. Sahir was a poet and film lyricist who wrote in the Hindi and Urdu languages. His work influenced Indian cinema, in particular Bollywood film.

1989 – Harmanpreet Kaur, Indian  Women’s cricket capatain  since 2016. Awarded Arjuna Award  by  Indian Sports & Youth Affairs ministry. She is the first Indian  woman cricketer to score a century  in 2018. (pic credit-Instgram)

1975 – Fardeen Khan, Bollywood actor and son of famous actor Feroz Khan. Acted in films like Visfot, Fida, No Entry, Ham Ho Gaye Aapke, Hevvy Bevvy, Janasheen etc. Awarded Filmare in 1999 and 3 more honours. (pic credit-Pinterest)

RIP….1995 – Dr. Duranand Kanhan Pillai, great litterateur of Malyali language.

Titbits….1968 – 6-year old Tommy Moore scores hole-in-one in golf (Hagerstown, Maryland).
