1849 – The Siege of Multan ended in Second Anglo-Sikh War: The Second Anglo-Sikh War of 1848-1849 was one of the last major military conflicts between the East India Company and an important Indian power before the 1857 revolt, and resulted in the annexation of the Punjab by the British (pic credit-Wikipedia).

1939 – The uranium atom was split for the first time using the cyclotron at Columbia University in New York City. Thus began the Manhattan Project, leading to the construction of the Atom Bomb.

1986 – Satwant Singh, Balbir Singh and Kehar Singh were sentenced to death for the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

1997 – American Lottie Williams was reportedly the first human to be struck by a remnant of a space vehicle after re-entering the earth’s atmosphere.

1999 – Graham Stewart Staines, an Australian missionary, and his 2 sons were burned to death in Manoharpur by activists of the Bajrang Dal. A trial court later sentenced Dara Singh to death but in 2011 it was reduced to life in prison on appeal.

2002 – In Calcutta heavily armed gunmen attacked the U.S. Cultural Centre. Five police officers were killed and twenty others, including one pedestrian and one private security guard, were wounded.

2013 – Scientist in China discover an ancient human fossil in a cave near Beijing; the 40,000 year-old leg bone shows it was related to the ancestors of present-day Asians and Native Americans.

1925 – Vijay Anand, popular actor & director. Younger brother of legendary Dev Anand. He acted in Kora Kagaz and directed several jubilee films like Guide,  Kala Bazar, Jewel Thief, Teesri Manzil, Johney Mera Naam, Tere Mere Sapne, Mein Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki. etc. He won Filmfare Awards 5 times and Zee Cine Award for Lifetime Achievement.

1972 – Namrata Shirodkar, Bollywood glamour actress who acted in  Vaastav, Anji, Kache Dhage, Dil Vil Pyar Vyar and Pukar etc. (pic credit-IMDb)

Died: 

1666 – Shah Jahan, 5th Mughal emperor, who built Taj Mahal in Agra in memory of his queen Mumtaz Mahal  (Noor Jahan). He’s believed to have married 14 times and last being his own daughter after Noor Jahan’s death. He died at the Agra fort as a Prisoner under his son Jahangir’s rule.
