1621 – Galileo invents telescope.

1732 – First recorded use of the ventilation technique (mouth-to-mouth) since it was commented upon by 16th century Flemish anatomist Andreas Vesalius

1736 – Astronomer Anders Celsius takes measurements that confirm Newton’s theory that the earth was an ellipsoid rather than the previously accepted sphere.

1910 – Neon lighting, developed by French physicist Georges Claude, made its public debut at the Paris Motor Show.

1922 – The first really successful Technicolor motion picture film was released. The movie, shown at the Rialto Theatre in New York City, was The Toll of the Sea.

1926 – Detective novelist Agatha Christie mysteriously disappears for 11 days.

1955 – In exercise of the powers conferred by the provision in Article 343 (2) of the Indian constitution, orders were issued for the use of Hindi language in addition to the English language for specific purposes of the union.

1967 – Dr. Christiaan Barnard, with his team of 20 surgeons, performed the first human heart transplant on a South African businessman, 54-yr-old Louis

Washkansky.

1971 – Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 starts.

1971 – India recognises Bangla Desh.

2012 – Vietnam accuses China of cutting seismic survey cables from territorial waters in the South China, disputed by Vietnam, the Philippines Malaysia, Taiwan, and Brunei.

2015 – US Defence Secretary Ash Carter announces all combat roles in US armed forced will be opened to women.

2019 – Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin announce they are stepping down from roles at parent company Alphabet, Sundar Pichai to become head of both.

1979 – Major Dhyan Chand, famous master of Hockey and Padma Bhushan awardee. Displayed his dribbling skills in 1928, 1932, and 1936 Olympics. Was offered German Citizenship by Adolf Hitler, but Major Dhyan Chand refused.

2011 – Dev Anand, romantic Bollywood actor.
