RS debate: Opposition stages walk out on Tawang

New Delhi: Opposition parties led by Congress staged a walk-out in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday demanding debate on the Chinese aggression in Tawang.
Leader of Opposition and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge raised the matter in the first half alleging that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh didn’t provide complete information in the House on the face-off between the Chinese and Indian troops.
“We want discussion on Chinese aggression. We want detailed information as to what’s happening there. Defence Minister has not provided full information. We are for the country,” said Kharge raising the matter during Zero Hour.
Deputy Chairman Harivansh, however, didn’t allow further debate on the issue following which Opposition MPs shouted slogans against the government.
Soon after, Members from Congress, Left, NCP, TMC and Shiv Sena, RJD and JMM staged a walk-out in the Upper House.
Earlier, Opposition parties met at the chamber of Mallikarjun Kharge ahead of the parliament proceedings for the day to chalk out strategy against the government on Tawang and other issues.
The Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, responding to the Tawang face-off on Tuesday, informed parliament that timely intervention of the troops on ground forced the Chinese soldiers back to their positions and that none of the Indian soldiers has either lost his life or got seriously injured in the December 9 scuffle with the PLA in Tawang.
He also assured the Parliament that the forces are fully committed to safeguarding the country’s territorial integrity.
Unsatisfied over the response, Opposition leaders demanded a discussion in the House. (UNI)
