6 arrested for attacking polling officials, disrupting Panchayat polls in Kurung Kumey

Itanagar: The Kurung Kumey district police on Wednesday arrested six persons in connection with the physical attack on an on-duty polling official and disruption of the poll process in a polling booth under Upper Koloriang Zilla Parishad Constituency that went to Panchayat bye-elections on Tuesday, officials said.
Kurung Kumey District Election Officer (DEO) Nighee Bengia said, accused Bengia Raghav alias Chadap (33) of Tayeng village has been arrested for assaulting the Presiding Officer Tadar Tachung and five others – Bengia Kamin (30) of Tayeng, Bengia Pacha (35), Bengia Kamsing, Bengia Takar (29) and Bengia Kaniang (all from Mara village) were nabbed for booth capturing and vitiating the poll process at the polling station in Tayeng Primary School.
The DEO said, all the arrested accused persons were sent for medical examination following complaints of them not keeping well, and they will be produced before the court today.
Earlier, a criminal case (No. 09/22) U/S 186/353/448/34 of Indian Penal Code R/W Sec 131/135A of Representation of the People Act, 1951 was registered at Koloriang Police Station following yesterday’s incident and an investigation was launched.
He informed that the injured presiding officer has been airlifted to Itanagar for improved medical treatment and admitted at Niba Hospital where he is undergoing treatment.
Meanwhile, the DEO said as approved by the state poll body (SEC), a fresh poll is being conducted at the Tayeng polling booth on Thursday (July 14) from 7 am to 4 pm, for which the security arrangements have already been made. (UNI)
