Delhi HC pulls up SDMC for concretization of trees
HC terms it as 'worst human rights violation'
New Delhi, Nov 27 (UNI) The Delhi High Court has berated the South Delhi Municipal Corporation for concretization of trees, calling it the ‘worst kind of human rights violation’.
Coming down heavily on SDMC, the single-Judge Bench of Justice Najmi Waziri said on Friday, “It seems that pegging down a tree is the worst kind of human rights abuse, which changes the whole environment and ecology.’
While hearing a petition that highlighted the authorities’ inaction to preserve trees in the national capital’s Vasant Vihar area, the court said they (SDMC) were changing the neighboiurhood of people and making them alien in their own environment, which happened to be the “worst form of human rights abuse”.
Concretization of trees means to cement the base of trees and put concrete all around it. Environmental experts say that a tree requires a breathing space of at least six feet.
During the hearing of the present matter, the court also rebuked the Delhi Police for car parking on pavements, which was shown in photographs brought on record. Justice Waziri issued notice to both SDMC and Delhi Police, seeking their response on the matter.
Advocate Sanjeev Sabharwal appeared for SDMC, while lawyer Aditya N Prasad represented the petitioner.
