1497 – Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama rounds Cape of Good Hope, on way to first voyage from Europe to discover India (whereas Indians had already discovered  Cape of Good Hope and Cape Town).

1809 – The first patent for a metallic writing pen in the U.S. was issued.

1910 – The first U.S. patent for a steel-shafted golf club was issued to Arthur F. Knight.

1914 – Indian troops take Basra in Mesopotamia (pic credit-Wikipedia).

1927 – The first U.S. patent for a snowmobile was issued to Carl J.E. Eliason. His “motor toboggan” had ski-like front runners and a rear drive track.

1963 – US President John F. Kennedy assassinated in Dallas, Texas. Kennedy was travelling with his wife, Jacqueline in a presidential motorcade when he was fatally shot by Lee Harvey Oswald. A ten-month investigation from November 1963 to September 1964 by the Warren Commission concluded that Oswald acted alone in shooting Kennedy.

1968 – Lok Sabha passed a resolution (Bill) to change the name of Madras state as Tamil Nadu.

1968 – 1st interracial TV kiss, Star Trek-Kirk and Uhura.

1986 – Mike Tyson became the world’s youngest (at 20 years 5 months)  heavyweight boxing champion after defeating Trevor Berbick. (pic credit-Sports Illustrated)

2018 – Leaning Tower of Pisa’s tilt reduced by 4 cm in 20 year project to stabilize it.

1899 – Shaheed Laxman Nayak, freedom fighter and prominent tribal  civil rights leader from Odisha.

1939 – Mulayam Singh Yadav, a prominent Uttar Pradesh politician and founder of Samajwadi Party. Was Chief Minister of the state 3 times and central minister of Defence  during 1996-98. He represented Azamgarh, Sambhal, Kannauj and Mainipuri  in Lok Sabha, His son Akhilesh Singh has also been CM of Uttar Pradesh for a term and at one time 22 of Mulayam Singh family were MLAs and MPs.

RIP….

1773 – Robert Clive, English  commander who established East India Company rule in Bengal and parts of eastern  parts of India. He was also  appointed Governor  of Bengal by UK Govt.

1967 – Tara Singh, freedom fighter, Akali Dal leader, master and politician.

You may have known….

Russia didn’t consider beer to be alcohol until 2011. It was previously classified as a soft drink. (Early evidence of beer is a 3900-year-old Sumerian poem in Mesopotamia in ancient Iraq, honouring Ninkasi, the patron goddess of brewing, which contains the oldest surviving beer recipe, describing the production of beer from barley via bread).
