1851 – The first public message was sent on the submarine telegraph cable under the English Channel between Dover, England and Calais, France.
1855 – A proposal for a tunnel under the English Channel was reported in the New York Daily Times, which, according to French engineer M. Loèpold Favre, would in five years connect Boulogne to Dover.
1909 – Attorney Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi left England for South Africa and wrote ”Hind Swaraj” on board S.S. Kildonan Castle.
1913 – 1st modern elastic brassiere patented by Mary Phelps Jacob.
1930 – The Rotolactor, invented by Henry W. Jeffries. This was a 50-stall revolving platform that enabled the milking of 1,680 cows in seven hours by rotating them into position with the milking machines.
1946 – Artificial snow from a natural cloud was produced over Mount Greylock for the first time in the U.S.
1952 – False fingernails 1st sold.
2014 – Representatives for the Islamic State announce that the group will begin minting its own currency in order to remove itself from the world financial system, which it considers ‘satanic’.
2017 – First Barbie doll to wear a hijab, modelled on Olympic fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad unveiled in New York.

1780 – Maharaja Ranjit Singh, “Lion of Punjab”.He was the first King of Sikh Empire, who ruled from 1801 to 1839 till his death. His capital was Lahore (now in Pakistan) and his empire spread from Kabul, Kashmir, Sindh, old Punjab upto Ludhiana and regions along Satluj river.
1935 – P Susheela, south Indian singer, called Nightingale of Indian Cinema or Melody Queen of Tamil Nadu. Sings in several languages and figures in Guinnes Book of World Records , was awarded Padam Bhushan in 2008 and Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award.
1967 – Juhi Chawla, Bollywood actor. She has acted in Punjabi, Bengali, Telugu, Tamil, Kannad and Malayalam films like QSQT, Raam Jaane, Darr, Ishq, Yes Boss, Duplicate, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, Bhoothnath and Ham Hsi Rahi Pyaar Ke etc. Awarded 2 Filmfare and 8 nominations, and several cinema awards. She also owns IPL franchise KKR alongwith actor Shahrukh Khan.
1980 – Harman Baweja, model and Bollywood actor/producer. Known for films like Love Story 2050, Victory, Diskyaoon, Vicky Kartoos, It’s My Life, Runaway, Aitraaz and some NetFlix series. He has won a Filmfare and StarDust awards. (picccredit-Getty Images)
