Uttarakhand Foundation Day: Golden Goal… Tunnel Projects to Revolutionize Road and Rail Connectivity
The development of tunnel projects in Uttarakhand promises to bring a new era of road and rail connectivity. The proposed 30 km tunnel between Dehradun and Tehri will significantly reduce travel time and distance between Tehri, Gangotri, and Yamunotri.
Uttarakhand’s rugged mountains and winding roads have long made travel exhausting and lengthy, but the answer lies in 66 tunnel projects slated for completion in the next decade. These projects will transform road connectivity across the state.
Among these is the proposed 30 km Milam-Lapthal tunnel connecting the remote districts of Chamoli and Pithoragarh. Once the 30 km tunnel between Dehradun and Tehri is completed, it will reduce not only time but also the distance between the important pilgrimage sites of Tehri, Gangotri, and Yamunotri.
Currently, 18 tunnels are operational in the state, and a 121-km-long rail project connecting Gangotri to Yamunotri is also in the pipeline. This includes a 17 km long rail tunnel between Jajal and Morod in Tehri district.
Under the Char Dham development project, a 902-meter tunnel is proposed to connect the Badrinath-Gaurikund National Highway in Rudraprayag, further boosting connectivity.
