1924 – Sunday Express publishes 1st British crossword puzzle.

1950 – Concentrated milk was first test-marketed in the U.S. Fresh milk contains about 88% water. Partial water removal concentrates the milk to one-third of its original volume. This gives benefits including improved shelf-life, reduced storage space, and lower weight, saving transportation cost. The high-temperature processing of evaporated or condensed milk results in changed taste. Concentrated milk, however, is made at lower pressures and temperatures so that when water is added, it tastes like fresh whole milk with the same food values.

1950 – India rebukes Mao for invasion of Tibet. Following invasion of Tibet by China, the Buddhist Guru and head of the land  fled to India and lives in exile since then.

1959 – The first 72-mile stretch of England’s first intercity Motorway, the M1, was opened. It was built at a rate of about a mile every 8 days, and cost £16 million.

1988 – A computer “worm” unleashed by a Cornell University graduate student, Robert T. Morris, began replicating wildly, clogging thousands of computers around the country. Intended as an experimental, self-replicating, self-propagating programme, Morris soon discovered that the programme was infecting machines at a much faster rate than he had anticipated. When Morris realised what was happening he sent an anonymous message, instructing programmers how to kill the worm and prevent re-infection. However, because the network route was clogged, this message did not get through until it was too late. (Morris, was later tried, fined and given probation).

2018 – Tiger thought to have killed 13 people shot dead after month-long hunt near Pandharkawada, central India.

1534 – Guru Ramdas, 4th  Guru of Sikhs and Punjabis, who founded  city Ramsar, now called Amritsar, the holiest pilgrim place of Sikhs where  Har Mandir  alias Swarn Mandir or Golden Temple (completed in 1577),  is situated. The original epic book Guru Granth Saheb was placed in Har Mandir  1604 and Akal Takhat situated in this place.

1871 – Kashinath Raghunath Mitra, famous editor of monthly magazine ‘Manoranjan.

1897 – Sohrab Meharwanji Modi, theatre and film producer, director and actor. Known for films  Sikander, Pukar, Prithvi Vallabh, Jhansi Ki Rani, Mirza Ghalib, Jailor, Nausherwane-e-Adil etc. Was awarded with Dada Saheb Phalke , National Film and President’s Medal for outstanding film production/directionm.

1960 – Anu Malik, popular singer, music composer/director.W on a National Award and 2 Filmfare awards for film songs  for Refugee,  Aa Gale Lag Jaa,  Badshah,  Baazi,  Begham Jaan etc.

1965 – Shahrukh Khan, one of the most successful  romantic actor,  film actor,  producer. Also known as King Khan entered cineworld with and acted in about 100 films including Baazigar, Dil Wale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Swades, Chak de India, Veer Zara, Darr etc. He has won 8 Filmfare Kal Ho Na Ho etc.

1981 – Esha Deol, Bollywood actor, elder daughter of legendary  romantic  Dharmendra and Hema Malini. Hasacted in Koi Mere Dil Se Poochhe, Dhoom2, Yuva, No Entry, Aayutha Ezhuhuthu (tamil film), Kaal, Cash, Ye Dil Ne Kaha etc. She won a filmfare award on debut in 2002.  (pic credit-India News) 

RIP…. 1774 – Lord Robert Clive, one of the founders of British Rule in India, British Army Chief and Diplomat. He committed suicide in England at the age of 49 under strain of ill health and charges of his misdeeds in India (pic credit-Getty Images).

Worshipping Weapons in Navrati (Ayudha Puja or Astra Puja).  Navratri is a festival dedicated to the worship of the Hindu deity Durga. The word Navaratri literally means nine nights in Sanskrit. During these nine nights and ten days, nine forms of Shakti/Devi are worshiped.
The festival is celebrated across the length and breadth of India. But in some parts of India (Gujarat and South India) on the ninth day of the festival, weapons and tools are worshipped!
